Interesting article by Andreas Zwinkau on why the proliferation of the waterfall methodology and later rise of scrum/agile were a result of the DOD (U.S. Department of Defense) standardizing not the conclusion but the problem statement of a paper.
The original paper even indicates that methodologies incorporating incremental and iterative development cycles are vastly preferable to the structure of successive phases like waterfall (note: in the paper it’s also not called that yet).
